Summer Sunday with the Slutskys

It was an action packed Summer Sunday. The triplets attended a classmate's birthday party and they are totally into celebrations nowadays. They understand the concept of a party with cake and goodie bags. I brought along CJ's cake so he could sit with everyone and enjoy the moment. I practically had to drag them out of there and the only incentive was to mention going to the pool.

During our Mexican dinner we played Spanish Flashcards. My Gringo husband led the lesson and it was like the blind leading the blind- only in Espanol. At one point I decided to make a video so my Grandmother could hear her grandchildren speaking her native language. It was all going well until CJ started swearing in English.

It is like I turn on the digital video camera and he shows off or something? Note to self, do not let him follow in his father's footsteps. Can you imagine the Street Fighter Swearing series led by CJ Slutsky- the son of the original street fighter- OY VAY!

After dinner I let them burn off some energy at the pool. The evening sun is perfect for photos and I wanted to really capture the cute smile and curly hair on CJ

especially after he said GD on the video. Eli and Natalie were playing mermaid and shark

and had races across the length of the baby pool and Charlotte spent a fair amount of time splashing,

dancing and pouring water on her head. They are like little fish. Only sassier.

When we got home it was straight into jammies. Natalie was supposed to wear the camisole and capris but insisted that she be allowed to switch with Eli because she wanted LONG SLEEVE PANTS.

Thankfully Eli was happy to appease her wishes, and he gladly put on hers instead. Of course I whipped out the camera because I am sure these images will be perfect for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah videos someday.

Tomorrow starts the first week without daytime plans. No school. No travel. No camp. No NOTHING. I am so excited. After the Sunday Swearing Session I am looking forward to some uneventful blog entries. How do you say, I am so screwed in Spanish?

Triplet Mania

After the last couple pf posts with all due respect to the Beatles, I am now blogging about Triplet Mania. The event of the year for those of us with Supertwins (triplets and higher order multiples) in the metro Columbus area.

Today was the annual triplet Spring picnic at Highbanks Park. We all gathered at the Northern Shelter house which needed little markings
all we had to do was find the shelter with a parking lot full of minivans and Suburbans. Upon a closer look at the green space you could see half a dozen choo choo wagons, so basically it was a moms of multiples free for all.

Welcome to Triplet Mania

There were over 20 families with triplets (plus) at the event. It was a great to see so many smiling faces!

The weather was ideal for schlepping all the gear, food, toys, wagons, strollers, and supplies. Sunny and less than 80 is perfect. The playground area was filled with color coordinated teams of kids and it was darling to stand back and watch. This is one place when no one asks you if they are triplets, no one says, Oh My You Have Your Hands Full, and no one asks if you took fertility drugs or if you watch Jon and Kate.

We assembled all the parents and kids for a group photo. Have you ever seen so many sets of multiples all at once? Our crew had so much fun hanging with their own kind so to speak.

This is the same group of women that meet locally once a month for cocktails and dinner. The picnic is the semi annual event that includes kids- so we get to put names and faces along with the horror stories of painting with poop, rotovirus times three, preschool problems, triple tantrums and other revelations. We have so much in common and support each other in a way that is just different from other moms with singletons. The bond is there from the get go and it really strengthens with time as our children grow up together. More fascinating is to see the growth and maturity in the kids themselves. Some of us had babies in the NICU together and clearly they kids have totally changed since then. What a wonderful group of totally amazing families.

Maybe next year I can sell tee shirts as a fundraiser for the March of Dimes- What parent of supertwins would not want to buy some cleverly worded clothing to support such an exceptional and personal charity. I will have to take orders in advance to be sure I have enough stock of:

My Parents are Exhausted
It Is Not A Party Until My Kid Pisses On The Playground
Monkey See Monkey Do, Monkey Get in Trouble Too
Triplet Mania 2009- The Supertwins Columbus Tour

Stay tuned for next Tuesday when it is time for the Moms to party with drinks and dinner sans the offspring. I will have another post about these fabulous friends- and there will be cocktails so it will be Triplet Momma Mania where cleverly worded tee shirts are not needed. You can find us when you roll up to the restaurant and all you see are minivans and some deserving women. See you then!

Gluten Free Almond Shortcakes with Fresh Strawberies and Vanilla Cream

This recipe is a variation on the regular strawberry shortcakes that are typically served with whipped cream. I add almond extract to the batter, real vanilla beans to the cream and the rest is just magic. These are so beautiful to look at but taste even better. Thanks to the Trader Joe's Gluten Free Pancake and Waffle mix they are a cinch to prepare.

1 bag TJ Gluten Free Pancake Mix
2 eggs beaten
1/2 c white granulated sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp Almond Extract
1/2 c canola oil
3/4 c. milk
1/2 pkg Vanilla pudding powder

Combine all of the above in a large mixing bowland mix until it is a smooth batter. Prepare the cake pans by spraying generously with Pam. Pour batter 3/4 full and bake at 350 until they spring back on top and a tooth pick comes out clean. Cool completelyon wire racks while you prep the vanilla cream and strawberries.

2 cups cold milk
8 ounces softened cream cheese
1 package vanilla pudding mix plus other half from above
one vanilla bean scraped of the seeds

Combine and cream all of the above except the beans. When the pudding completely blendedadd scraped vanilla beans and stir to mix in. Let Chill wrapped with plastic wrap on top.

Assemble the cakes by filling the centerwith the vanilla cream. You can layer this if you make a sheet pan or round cake as an alternative to the individual cakes. Decorate with generous amounts of the berries and a dollop of whipped cream and mint leaf as a garnish. This tastes too good to be gluten free because the pudding makes it so moist and the almond extract makes it really flavorful. Happy Summer!

Strawberry Fields Forever!

Last week we enjoyed HERE COMES THE SUN, and it only seems fitting that this week we transition to celebrate, STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER!

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Our field trip to Jacquemin Farms was so incredibly worthy- the kids just love to pick the fruit and nothing says Summer like delicious strawberries. I let them roam the patch and pluck the fruit from the low vines. Taking three and a half year old triplets into the strawberry fields is like having your own migrant workers on retainer. This is a fun way to spend the morning. As you can see on the sticky, red juice filled faces, the berries were perfect!

The bonus in this hair brained field trip is coming home with a huge crate of the most succulent strawberries.

Argenida had a blast too, and there is something really rewarding about sharing these experiences with her, she is a kid at heart. We can't wait to make this a weekly field trip because it is a great energy spending experience for the kids and it is a thrifty way to stock up on the freshest possible fruit. It does not get any fresher than picked this morning!

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Stay tuned for a Gluten Free Strawberry tartlet later today.
